Most Windows users should always stick to the automatic update schedule or at least check regularly to make sure updates are being installed at their own pace.
After all, updating the operating system improves features, fixes bugs and closes security holes that can be exploited by malware and attackers.
However, there are reasons why you might want to avoid a specific update or disable updates altogether.
What are the most common disadvantages of Windows Update?
We all know the benefits of Windows updates, but what are the drawbacks?
- Your system can’t handle it – Those of us with older systems or limited hardware capabilities already struggle with slow performance. Windows updates can often clog up your hard drive and introduce new features that require more processing power and RAM. It may just not be worth it if your system can’t handle Windows updates.
- Background information – Automatic updates often run in the background or when you’re away from your PC. This can eat up resources and interrupt other tasks you need to focus on.
- Unwanted features – Remember the old saying, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it? If you’re a creature of habit, you might not want to introduce new features to your computer.
- Corruption risk – When you are performing intensive and important tasks, you don’t want an update to take over the task or, even worse, a Windows update to fail and corrupt your system.
- Bandwidth – Windows updates require you to download files from the internet, and some of them can be quite large. If you have a limited internet connection or bandwidth issues, it may not be feasible to allow Windows update downloads that take a long time.
- Security risks – While updates are often released to reduce security risks, it is not uncommon for a poorly tested update to be released with brand new vulnerabilities discovered in the first few days. Therefore, it is wise to hold off on updates until more is known.
Is it safe to ignore Windows updates?
Despite these specific concerns, it is always best to keep your Windows operating system up to date if you can. However, nothing will go wrong if you don’t.
If you know how to secure your computer and no one else has access to it, you can safely ignore updates and stick with a build you’re comfortable with.
Make sure you use a reliable antivirus program, avoid untrustworthy software, and be careful when opening emails and browsing the Internet.
How do I disable Windows Updates?
1. Pause the updates
- Press the Windows + I keys to open Institutions.
- Now go to Update and security and click on Windows update.
- Then click on Advanced options, and under Pause updates Select the furthest date.
Unfortunately, Windows doesn’t provide an easy way to disable updates, but you can pause them temporarily. You can then push the date back every week or so to maintain an update-free PC.
2. Use the Registry Editor to block the updates
Remark: Modifying the registry can be risky and any mistake can cause your system to crash.
- Press the Windows + R keys to the Walk dialog box.
- Type regedit and press Enter to open the Registry Editor.
- Navigate to the following registry key via the folder tree on the left: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate
- If the WindowsUpdate key does not exist, you can create it by right-clicking on the key. Windows folder icon and select New key and give it a name WindowsUpdate.
- Right click on the WindowsUpdate press and select Newthen choose DWORD (32-bit) Value from the menu.
- Give the new value a name No automatic update and press Enter.
- Double click on No automatic update and set the value to 1 to disable automatic updates.
- Click on OK to save the changes.
Of course, that’s not always practical. Instead, you can edit the Windows registry and force Windows not to update. If you make a mistake while editing the registry, Fortect can automatically restore it to its previous state.
How can I roll back a Windows update?
If you want to undo an update that has already been installed, follow these steps:
- Press the To win + I key combination to start Institutions.
- Click on Update and security and select Windows update.
- Click View update history.
- Click on the Remove updates to open a list of all installed updates on your system.
- Find the update you want to undo, right-click and select To delete.
When the rollback option is not available and the new update has damaged the system, Fortect can help you recover Windows.
- Download and install on your PC.
- Open the program and perform a scan.
- Click Start repair to fix all Windows problems.
- Wait for the process to complete and restart your PC.
Fortect replaces missing and corrupted system files with clean versions from the working Windows components database.
Updating Windows can have drawbacks for users on older systems or those who don’t want important tasks interrupted. While disabling updates is never recommended, it’s safe to do so in the meantime.
Windows repair tools like Fortect can protect your system from corrupted updates, registry errors, and other problems.
